Colorado used to be a pretty cool state. Then Californians showed up and Californicated the whole place with things like gun control.
Now, it’s an anti-gun place where pot can be sold on every street corner, but not an AR-15.
If that wasn’t bad enough, they’re taking a step in the wrong direction with a new bill that will trample not just the Second Amendment, but also the First.
The bill, HB 1146, seeks to criminalize not just producing your own firearm, particularly with a 3D printer, but also the distribution of the files used for making such guns.
While the Supreme Court did uphold the Biden-era ban on so-called ghost gun kits, one thing the Court recognized is that it’s constitutional to make your own firearms. Unfortunately, because that wasn’t the question the Court was facing, it didn’t seem to stop any states from trying to ban the practice anyway, which is bad enough. This is a blatant infringement on the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

FIREARMS
FIRST AMENDMENT
GUN CONTROL
SECOND AMENDMENT
After all, keeping and bearing arms implies the right to obtain arms. Nothing says that they have to be purchased from a traditional, licensed manufacturer. People have been building their own guns since before this country was this country.
In addition to that, HB 1146 goes after people who share the files that would be used in a 3D printer, and since the courts have long upheld computer files to be a form of speech, that means the bill seeks to criminalize speech Colorado Democrats don’t like.
Sure, it’s pieces of code now, but do you really think they’d stop there if they got half a chance?
Obviously not.
Meanwhile, criminals who want to make guns, either for themselves or for sale, will simply keep on doing what they want and not lose a moment’s worth of sleep.
But that’s not the totality of the stupid. Oh no, not by a long shot.
It seems that a report from Everytown for Gun Safety illustrated the massive increase in so-called ghost guns in the state. They went from nine in 2020 to a whopping 64 in 2025.
Sixty-four “ghost guns.”
In a state of almost six million people.
And for that minuscule number, they’re willing to destroy the Second Amendment and the First Amendment, even while nothing in that report can illustrate that the guns were recovered from anyone who couldn’t have gotten a gun through some other illicit means.
Hell, Colorado already has a ban on so-called ghost guns as it is; this bill just makes it stricter, and that law didn’t do a blasted thing.
Like it or not, computer code is speech, and that means restricting code like this is an infringement on free speech. It’s no different than how they keep wanting to make hate speech or “misinformation” a crime. For all their rhetoric about respecting people’s truths and free speech, Democrats have never stepped away from a chance to destroy civil liberties in the name of whatever cause they’re championing in a given moment.
How can anyone be so stupid as not to see it?
